What Is PPDA?
PPDA stands for Passes Per Defensive Action, and it is the most widely used metric for measuring a team’s pressing intensity. It calculates how many passes a team allows opponents to make before performing a defensive action (tackle, interception, or foul) in the attacking 60% of the pitch.
Lower PPDA = More Aggressive Pressing. A PPDA of 8 means the team allows just 8 opponent passes before intervening — aggressive, suffocating pressing. A PPDA of 15+ indicates a team that sits deeper and allows opponents to have the ball.
Typical PPDA ranges:
- Elite pressing teams (Liverpool, Leverkusen): 6-9 PPDA
- Average pressing: 10-12 PPDA
- Low-block defensive teams: 13-18 PPDA
PPDA provides objective data on something previously assessed purely by eye — how intensely a team presses. It has become a standard metric in football analytics and is particularly valuable when combined with other metrics like xG and xPTS.
PPDA and Match Outcomes
Research has established clear links between pressing intensity and match outcomes:
High-pressing teams (low PPDA): Create more turnovers in dangerous areas, generate more transition chances, and win more matches overall. However, they are vulnerable to teams that can play through the press — when the press is beaten, high-quality chances result. They also tire more during fixture congestion.
Low-pressing teams (high PPDA): Concede less territory but may eventually crack under sustained pressure. They are harder to break down in cup football, depend heavily on counter-attacking quality, and are more consistent across 90 minutes.
The interaction between two teams’ PPDA values is crucial for betting. A high-pressing team vs. a low-pressing team creates a pattern where the pressing team dominates early but may tire, while the counter-attacking team waits for opportunities. This directly affects goals timing and match result probabilities.
Using PPDA for Betting Analysis
Fixture Congestion Impact: Teams with very low PPDA suffer more from fixture congestion than deep-sitting teams. After midweek matches, pressing intensity typically drops 10-20%, levelling the playing field against weaker opponents. This is a reliable angle for live and pre-match betting.
First Half / Second Half Goals: High-pressing teams create more chances in the first half but fade in the second. This creates value in “First Half Over 0.5 Goals” when pressing teams play, and second-half goals for the opposition.
Home vs Away PPDA: Some teams adjust pressing based on the opponent. A team might press aggressively at home (PPDA 8) but sit deep away (PPDA 14). Always check if data distinguishes between home and away values, as this changes your betting analysis entirely.
Combine with xG: A team with low PPDA but also low xG may be pressing without converting turnovers into chances — looks busy but is not dangerous. The market may overvalue their energy without checking the output.
Pressing Matchups and Tactical Predictions
Understanding PPDA matchups helps predict how specific fixtures will unfold:
Press vs Press (both low PPDA): Expect a high-tempo, open match with transitions in both directions. Over 2.5 goals and BTTS are strong candidates. These matches are physically demanding and often produce goals from turnovers.
Press vs Block (low PPDA vs high PPDA): Expect the pressing team to dominate possession and territory, with the blocking team counter-attacking. First-half goals for the pressing team, potential second-half goals for the counter-attackers as legs tire. Over/under goals timing markets are useful here.
Block vs Block (both high PPDA): Expect a tactical, low-event match. Under 2.5 goals is a strong candidate. Both teams sit deep and wait for the other to commit forward, resulting in few clear chances.
