The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has announced major changes to football's handball rules, effective from the start of the 2026 season. The modifications aim to address ongoing controversy and provide clearer guidance for match officials.
Key changes include:
1. Natural Position Definition: The rule now provides a more precise definition of "natural position" for arms. Arms above shoulder height will generally be considered unnatural, regardless of intent.
2. Accidental Handball Leading to Goals: The rule has been refined to distinguish between immediate and indirect goal-scoring situations. Only handball directly before a goal will result in automatic cancellation.
3. Referee Discretion: Match officials will have increased discretion to consider context, including ball distance, reaction time, and deflections.
4. VAR Protocol: The threshold for VAR intervention has been adjusted to reduce overturns for marginal handball incidents.
IFAB technical director David Elleray explained: "These changes respond to feedback from players, coaches, and referees. Our goal is to make the handball rule clearer while maintaining the spirit of the game."
The changes will be implemented across all competitions under FIFA jurisdiction, including the Premier League, La Liga, Champions League, and international tournaments. Referees are currently undergoing training sessions to ensure consistent application.
Former referee Mark Clattenburg welcomed the changes: "This provides much-needed clarity. The previous interpretation created too much confusion and inconsistency."
