Liverpool — Club History

Liverpool were founded in March 1892 after a dispute split Everton from the ground at Anfield. The Bill Shankly era from 1959 transformed the club into English football's dominant force; Bob Paisley's Liverpool then won three European Cups in five seasons (1977, 1978, 1981) and built the most decorated period in any English club's history.

After the 1989 Hillsborough disaster and the 30-year wait for a 19th league title, the Jürgen Klopp era from 2015 brought a 2019 Champions League and the 2019–20 Premier League — Liverpool's first top-flight title in three decades. Klopp also delivered the FA Cup (2022), League Cup (2022, 2024) and a UEFA Super Cup.

Arne Slot replaced Klopp in 2024. Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold remain Liverpool's most-recognised players going into the second half of the decade. Liverpool's six European Cups remain the most by any English club.
