Manchester City — Club History
Manchester City were founded in 1880 in the West Gorton area of Manchester and spent most of the 20th century as the second team in the city, behind the more decorated Manchester United. The 2008 takeover by the Abu Dhabi United Group transformed the club's finances and, under managers Roberto Mancini, Manuel Pellegrini and Pep Guardiola, City built one of the dominant teams in Premier League history.
Pep Guardiola, appointed in 2016, has delivered six Premier League titles (2017–18, 2018–19, 2020–21, 2021–22, 2022–23, 2023–24), four League Cups, three FA Cups, and the 2023 UEFA Champions League — completing the continental treble in that season. The club faces ongoing Premier League charges relating to alleged financial fair-play breaches between 2009 and 2018; an independent hearing concluded in late 2024 with a verdict pending.
Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland, Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias anchor the contemporary squad. The Manchester Derby against Manchester United is the defining domestic rivalry; matches against Liverpool defined much of the late-2010s title race.
