Tottenham Hotspur — Club History

Tottenham Hotspur were founded in 1882 by Bible class boys in north London. In 1961 they became the first English club of the 20th century to win the league and FA Cup double, under Bill Nicholson. In 1963 they became the first British club to win a European trophy (the European Cup Winners' Cup).

The 1980s and early 1990s produced cult heroes from Glenn Hoddle to Paul Gascoigne, and Tottenham won FA Cups in 1981, 1982 and 1991. The Mauricio Pochettino era from 2014 culminated in a 2019 UEFA Champions League final appearance — the first in club history — though Tottenham lost 2-0 to Liverpool in Madrid.

The 62,850-capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium opened in 2019 and is one of the most modern venues in world football, with a retractable pitch that allows it to host NFL fixtures. Harry Kane departed for Bayern Munich in 2023; Son Heung-min, James Maddison and Cristian Romero anchor the current squad. The North London Derby against Arsenal is the club's defining domestic fixture.
