Tottenham Hotspur were founded in 1882 by Bible class boys in north London. In 1961 they became the first English club of the 20th century to win the league and FA Cup double, under Bill Nicholson. In 1963 they became the first British club to win a European trophy (the European Cup Winners' Cup).

The Mauricio Pochettino era from 2014 culminated in a 2019 UEFA Champions League final appearance — the first in club history — though Tottenham lost 2-0 to Liverpool in Madrid.
