Chelsea — Club History

Chelsea were founded on 10 March 1905 by Gus Mears, originally as the occupant of the already-built Stamford Bridge stadium. The club spent much of the 20th century as a London curiosity until Roman Abramovich's purchase in 2003 transformed it into a global force.

Under José Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti, Roberto Di Matteo, Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea won five Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies (2012, 2021) between 2003 and 2022. The Todd Boehly–Clearlake Capital ownership took over in 2022 following sanctions against Abramovich, and has invested heavily in young talent.

Chelsea hold the rare distinction of having won the FIFA Club World Cup, the Champions League, the Europa League and every domestic English trophy. The London Derby against Arsenal is the club's defining domestic rivalry; matches against Liverpool and Manchester United have produced many of the Premier League era's defining moments.
