Real Madrid Club de Fútbol were founded in 1902 in Madrid. King Alfonso XIII granted the club the "Real" (royal) title in 1920, and the club has borne the royal crown on its crest ever since.
Real Madrid dominated the early European Cup era, winning the first five editions between 1956 and 1960 under the legendary forward line of Alfredo Di Stéfano and Ferenc Puskás. The Galácticos era of the early 2000s brought David Beckham, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo, Luis Figo and Roberto Carlos to the Bernabéu in successive summers.
Under Carlo Ancelotti and previously Zinedine Zidane, Real Madrid won five Champions League titles between 2014 and 2024 — including three consecutive titles from 2016 to 2018, a feat unmatched in the modern Champions League era. Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé lead the current generation.
