Manchester United — Club History

Originally formed in 1878 as Newton Heath Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, the club was renamed Manchester United in 1902. Sir Matt Busby rebuilt the team after the Munich air disaster of 1958, eventually leading them to the 1968 European Cup — the first English club to lift Europe's top prize.

Sir Alex Ferguson's 27-year reign from 1986 to 2013 delivered 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies (1999, 2008), and a treble in 1998–99 that remains one of the most celebrated single-season achievements in football history.

The post-Ferguson era has been characterised by managerial change, ownership disputes between the Glazer family and the Manchester United Supporters' Trust, and a long rebuild now overseen by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS sporting leadership. Rúben Amorim succeeded Erik ten Hag in late 2024.

Manchester United are joint-record holders for FA Cups (13, alongside Arsenal) and hold the most English top-flight titles (20). The rivalry with Liverpool — the two clubs are the most successful in English football history — is the most-watched domestic fixture globally.
