Celtic Football Club were founded on 6 November 1887 by Brother Walfrid, a Marist Brother who established the club to raise money for the poor of the East End of Glasgow's Irish immigrant community. The club's Irish-Catholic identity remains central to its support base and its ongoing rivalry with Rangers (the Old Firm derby).
Celtic's defining moment came on 25 May 1967, when manager Jock Stein's "Lisbon Lions" became the first British club to win the European Cup, beating Internazionale 2-1 in Lisbon. Famously, every member of that squad was born within 30 miles of Celtic Park — an achievement unrepeatable in the modern game.
Celtic have won the Scottish league title in 12 of the last 14 seasons (since 2011-12) — the longest period of dominance in their history. Brendan Rodgers returned for a second spell as manager in 2023 and delivered a domestic treble in 2024-25.
