AC Milan — Club History

AC Milan were founded on 16 December 1899 by Englishman Alfred Edwards and remain the only Italian club whose name still uses the English spelling "Milan". The club's defining eras came under Nereo Rocco in the 1960s (two European Cups), under Arrigo Sacchi's revolutionary back-four 4-4-2 in the late 1980s, and under Carlo Ancelotti in the 2000s.

AC Milan's seven European Cup / Champions League titles place them second on the all-time list, behind only Real Madrid. The 1989 and 1990 finals under Sacchi (4-0 and 1-0 vs Steaua and Benfica respectively) are widely cited as the apex of pressing football's first wave.

After a long period of decline tied to the Berlusconi era's financial contraction, RedBird Capital purchased the club in 2022 and Milan won the Scudetto under Stefano Pioli. Sérgio Conceição took charge in late 2024 with the brief to restore Champions League consistency.
