Atlético Madrid — Club History

Club Atlético de Madrid were founded in 1903 by three Basque students living in Madrid as a youth branch of Athletic Bilbao. The club became independent in 1923 and has been the third force in Spanish football ever since, behind Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Diego Simeone has managed Atlético since December 2011 — by far the longest active tenure of any La Liga manager. Under "Cholo", Atlético won La Liga in 2013-14 and 2020-21, reached two Champions League finals (both lost to Real Madrid), and won three Europa Leagues. Simeone's Atlético became synonymous with a disciplined, physical, low-block style that won admirers and detractors in equal measure.

Atlético's move to the Metropolitano in 2017 and the global commercial push of recent years have positioned the club as a permanent top-three La Liga side. Antoine Griezmann, Julián Álvarez, Jan Oblak and Koke anchor the contemporary squad.
