Borussia Dortmund — Club History

Borussia Dortmund were founded in 1909 by young Catholic men in the Borussia tavern in Dortmund. The club's distinctive yellow-and-black colours date from the 1910s, and Signal Iduna Park's Südtribüne — the Yellow Wall — accommodates 24,454 standing fans, the largest free-standing grandstand in European football.

The Jürgen Klopp era from 2008 to 2015 brought back-to-back Bundesliga titles (2010-11, 2011-12) and the 2013 Champions League final at Wembley. Dortmund's distinctive heavy-metal football and youth development model has produced players like Robert Lewandowski, Mario Götze, Jadon Sancho, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham — all of whom moved on to bigger clubs for record fees, partly funding Dortmund's continued top-flight existence.

Niko Kovač took charge in early 2025 after Edin Terzić's departure. Dortmund reached the 2024 Champions League final (lost 0-2 to Real Madrid at Wembley) — the club's first since 2013.

Klopp's Dortmund played the more exciting football but lost narrowly to Bayern — the first all-German Champions League final and Klopp's last shot at European glory with BVB.
