Nottingham Forest were founded in 1865 by a group of shinty players who decided to switch to football, making them one of the oldest professional clubs anywhere in the world. The club's defining era came under Brian Clough between 1975 and 1993 — Forest won the First Division in 1977–78, their only league title, and remarkably went on to lift the European Cup in 1979 and 1980. They remain the only club to have won the European Cup more times than their own domestic top flight.
After a 23-year absence, Forest returned to the Premier League in 2022 via the Championship playoff. The club has invested heavily in the squad under the ownership of Evangelos Marinakis, and finished the 2024–25 season in European-qualifying contention.
